================================================ Subject: Brett the bassist From: "Sandy Carter" To: Date: Wed 27 Mar 2002 19:20:08 -0600 ================================================ Here's a quote from Guitar One magazine from Jan 2002 about Mark's thoughts on Brett's bass playing and playing bass on Weathered, just in case you haven't read it: Guitar One: What about the bass player situation? Did you hire someone to play bass in the studio or did you do it? Mark: We talked about finding a bass player; we thought about trying a couple guys out. Brett (Hestla) was in the studio with his band, so he wasn't available. The whole time I was thinking that I could do it. So after a few bass powwows, I decided to do it myself. Every guitarist thinks that the bass is easy, that it's just like playing guitar but with fewer strings. But it's not easy at all. To get into the mind frame of a bass player is not as easy as I thought. GO: Did you ever feel inadequate as a bass player? Mark: Not really. I just focused on keepin' it groovy. I had four guys keeping an eye on me. If there were doubts, it would be from the producers. As soon as we did one bass track, though, they were pleasantly surprised. GO: What was your bass rig like in the studio? Mark: With both guitar and bass it was pretty straightforward. I went straight through the board on bass, so I could sit with the producers instead of separating myself in a room. Everyone was there and could help out if I needed it.
