conversations of any ilk aren't static.  they ebb and flow.  to try to continuously tunnel conversations on a single topic simply doesn't work.  it never has and it never will.  besides, oftentimes the off topic stuff helps me to get to know other people that are involved and that always enhances the topical conversations.  IOW it's easier to have a topic-related conversation with someone I know rather than with a stranger.

I have to admit, I subscribed to this list to talk about Creed and I agree that more on-topic discussion will be facilitated by moderating the list. But with all due respect, if I had the choice of talking about various subjects in a bar and taking a beer bottle to the head because I offended someone or chatting about Creed and Creed alone from a prison cell I'd just want to know if the bar in question has Sam Adams or Guiness on tap so I could toss back a couple good cold ones before getting beaned.
