================================================ Subject: Hootie Review and Set List From: "Keith P. Mears" To: Date: Sun 2 Dec 2001 01:43:06 -0500 ================================================ Debbi managed to get out of Seattle ON TIME and both flights and connections went essentially without a hitch. I picked her up at the airport, we made a quick jet to her hotel, which was about two blocks from EVERYTHING, namely the RCA Dome, Conseco Fieldhouse was within shouting distance, and the venue was a block and a half north. After getting her checked in then SETTLED in we made our way across the street to the Circle Center Mall where WMG is. On the way I learned that Debbi can't walk a straight line even when sober! Had a bite of dinner at Johnny Rockets (GREAT burgers!) and then we went and waited in line. Doors finally opened at 7 (despite the tickets saying they'd open at 6). One of the security guys actually told Debbi she'd have to turn her hat around so the bill faced the front, because DRESS CODE! We cracked up about it, and she ended up not even wearing it. Debbi's been sending me posts from the Hootie BB all week and there have been rave reviews for the support band, Jonasay. And deservedly so, because these guys deserve a very serious listen. They're from Washington DC, but rest assured, we'll ALL know more about them in the future. They really kicked ass, and they had a great vibe going on, despite there being a few technical glitches here and there. Also, this was the most CLEAN CUT rock band I've EVER seen! MY hair is short, and these guys made me look like a hippie! As they drew close to the end of their set, Mark Bryan from HBF took the stage for the last few numbers and helped warm up the crowd. Following a short "intermission" while Jonasay's equipment was removed from the stage, it was on with the main event. And right from the beginning I was totally digging it. Mind you, until a month ago, I bashed this band with reckless abandon. Well, NO MORE! Simply amazing, from start to finish. We were directly in front of Dean Felber, with only one row of people between us and the stage, so I have no idea how many people were in the venue. It sounded like a lot! Here's the set list (in no particular order) for Jonasay. I missed a few songs, but I didn't actually know any of the material anyway, so hopefully they'll forgive me! Fire In The Hole Wish Ultraman Gone Away Peter Pan They did a bunch of other ones, but I don't know the names of them. Not a bad song in the lot, either. Here's the setlist (more or less) for HBF: (new song) Hanna Jane (new song) Will the circle be unbroken (tribute to George Harrison) Desert Mountain Showdown Only Lonely I go Blind (i have no idea how i managed not to faint watching Deano sing this one.. i love his voice on this song) (new song) (new song) Old Man & Me Medley (with mark's rap, three, fight the power) ENCORE she talks to angels/let her cry medley Black Magic Woman - OH MAN THIS ROCKED I will wait Wishing ENCORE (new song) (this one iirc was a tribute to US troops) Araby time ENCORE (new song) Bluesy Revolution Long Train Runnin' (ANOTHER ROCKIN' SONG) Only Wanna Be with You So after the show, we're trying to get backstage to meet Darius and the gang, but not having a great deal of luck. Debbi asked me to go over and grab her the Jonasay CD, so I headed over to the entrance area. When I got there, the guys were right by the table, signing autographs and just basically chatting with anyone who cared to chat with them. I picked up two copies, and got all four of the guys to sign both, one for me and one for Debbi. They were MORE than willing, especially after I told them she had flown in from Seattle just for the show! All four of the guys, Justin (lead vocals/acoustic guitar/keyboards), Mark (lead/rhythm guitars), Mike (drums/backing vocals), and Michael (bass/backing vocals) were SO easy to talk to, and FUNNY! If they can keep their heads on straight, this band is primed for the big time. We then met Darius, Mark and Dean and got their autographs. Mark gave Debbi a hug and thanked her for coming so far to see the show. We wandered around the club and ran into Michael and Justin from Jonasay. Debbi thanked them for signing her CD and they had quite a pleasant chat. He asked if he'd see her at the New Years Eve gig with Hootie in Myrtle beach and Debbi, being Debbi, is really thinking about risking her marriage to go! ;-) Seriously, if you guys get a chance to see them, you won't be disappointed. Michael has officially (or maybe it's unofficial...who knows?) declared her Jonasay's ambassador to Seattle. What an honor! On our way out, we ran into Soni who also thanked Debbi for coming so far. All in all a truly exceptional show. The guys were full of energy, really had a good time and all of us left feeling great! I can't say enough good things about Jonasay, and I will forever be grateful to Debbi for 1)making an 1800 mile trip (spending the best part of 2 days on a plane!), 2)being the coolest woman on earth (no, REALLY), and 3)showing me the error of my ways concerning Hootie & the Blowfish.
