I just watched it and that's why I'm looking for the archives... 'cause everything I said a few weeks ago about bands performing on SNL was true.  Not warmed up, sucky acoustics, etc.
 
I actually thought that all things considered, it was pretty good.  I'd say see them early on the tour, though.  His voice will be wrecked in short order and he won't be hitting the high notes for very long.   It didn't sound at all like the studio versions of the songs, but that's just fine.  Not much live does.  At least the good stuff.  Live engineering can only go so far.

I also have heard from my friend who sings, that there are those "high notes" in "MS" and it's very difficult to sing.
 
But the other reason why he didn't sound very good (as some say, I haven't seen him) MAY be, that it was the first time when he sings the new songs, maybe he doesn't "feel" those songs so good yet or something. He just needs some time and practice with singing new stuff. Just a thought...
