You hang it upside down when you're in trouble, and at half staff with a tragedy. Also, if your not using it, I think you are supposed to fold it in triangles. And to get into the basics: The flag has 13 red and white strips always starting with red on the bottom, a blue box with 50 stars in it at the left-hand corner. The stars are going in a 6 - 5 - 6 - 5 pattern from bottom to top.
