I had no idea as to how much horrible that the "Holy War" dilemma. 1. (Logic) An argument which presents an antagonist with two or more alternatives, but is equally conclusive against him, whichever alternative he chooses. Note: The following are instances of the dilemma. A young rhetorician applied to an old sophist to be taught the art of pleading, and bargained for a certain reward to be paid when he should gain a cause. The master sued for his reward, and the scholar endeavored to ?lude his claim by a dilemma. ``If I gain my cause, I shall withhold your pay, because the judge's award will be against you; if I lose it, I may withhold it, because I shall not yet have gained a cause.'' ``On the contrary,'' says the master, ``if you gain your cause, you must pay me, because you are to pay me when you gain a cause; if you lose it, you must pay me, because the judge will award it.'' --Johnson. 2. A state of things in which evils or obstacles present themselves on every side, and it is difficult to determine what course to pursue; a vexatious alternative or predicament; a difficult choice or position. If we quit arguing over differences. And try to find alternatives that suit both sides. I'm sure that we will be further ahead. Instead of into a propulsion of tragedies. It doesn't really matter what tribe is taller. Nor which race is darker or lighter. Nor does it really matter as to which religious doctrine suits your ideals. But to kill each other over such differences is an inexcusable action. The thing with compromise is that you never get "your way". So the saying goes. But the positive thing is that you learn from others. Besides the title from the Bush (band) song. I think that there are other songs that have similar blunt statements. I like a recent fortune that I read. (program for fun and wise sayings). It said something like. Before you were born. You were nothing. when you are alive. It is for only a short time. When you die. It is for eternity. Best wishes, Jim PS - I hope that this incident didn't change your mind about international relations. Stay strong. ------------------------------------- On Thu, 2001-09-13 at 20:33, fmn wrote: > Hey Jim and all, > First of all, on a general basis, let me just express my feelings of deep disturbance by the terrorist attacks in the US. I totally condemn such actions and don't think that they are in any way justified - whatever political or other background they originate from. The loss of lifes cannot ever be recompensated. The highest value on earth has been disregarded and shamelessly destroyed. I pray for the souls of those who died and for their relatives. No words can express the cruelty of these actions, so please forgive me if what I've said just now seems like an overused cliche-speech. > > The subject of my mail is a quotation by "Bush", a rock band.
