They're also pretty hard to kill. The first one (named Neurotica, for the way it would try to attack anything that touched the side of the fishbowl) lived for a few years, and the second one (Oscar) lasted until my oldest son (I think he was three or four at the time) took it upon himself to dump everything that was on top of my dresser into the fishbowl to keep Oscar company. (Handfuls of change, perfume bottles, rolls of film...). Unfortunately, Oscar was a solitary fish, and all the "company" finished him off. =( But, as long as you don't have kids, betas are pretty nifty, low maintenance little fish.
