but I'm guessing (based on my armchair psychology) that if he were a security guard or a principal of a school or some other position that wields a great deal of power he'd "carry that attitude into his home life".  it's not the military per se that does it.  Although, I'll bet that it's just that type of structure that people with that personality are attracted to.

My grandpa was a drill instructor (or sergeant... I can't remember which is for what branch) in the Navy, and carried that attitude into his home life.  My dad was in the Navy, but I don't know him well enough to say what he's like.  And my ex-husband was in the Army for a short time - he left before he finished basic, though, when a wall locker fell on him and crushed his foot - he opted to leave rather than be recycled.  But he hated it anyway, and I don't think he has the right personality for the military - too much of a free spirit mindset.  I wanted to join the Peace Corps, but decided against it when I became pregnant with my oldest son.  Since I have three military branches covered in three generations of male relatives, think that means my son will join the Air Force?
