It's not a popularity contest. The President represents the entire country, not just the crowded costal areas. This system forces them to pay attention to the needs of the entire country.
 
Gore got more votes. But if you look at a map of which counties went for Gore and which counties went for Bush, it looks like Bush crushed Gore. Check it out: http://www.rense.com/general5/mandate.gif
 
This system ensures that the President isn't elected by California, Florida and New York at the expense of the rest of the nation.

Hey mate

All I was saying is that it is a failing of your system in that the most poular candidate overall didn't win. (Al Gore in total got more votes (not states) than george w bush) which was all I said). About the compulsory part. It is not compolsory to vote just to rock up on the day which if I recall is not the way you guys work.
