================================================ Subject: Dead end road!.. Drivel? From: "Creed - 7M3 - Live" To: Date: Fri 10 Aug 2001 20:06:28 -0400 ================================================ The thing about Windows is mainly financial. But the fact that there are so many versions out there that are basically the same. I never tried Windows 2000, except for a few moments. In the few moments that I tried to install something that worked fine on earlier versions. But, after I tried to install the program that was a runtime Access application from Access 97. The system cried out for many dll files. The system did not just tell you that there was a newer version installed. You had to ignore each instance of a dll file requested install. Then after the whole installation process, the thing would not work anyway.I know that the database engine is dependent upon the kernel. So I left the 2000 machine applicationless. The person goes to another windows machine to use the database. There are many people that work in our IS department that have trouble with dll file incompatibility. The thing that bothered me most about the 2000 system was that it had some rejection about a shared program that was not showing approval in the registry. It sounded like a system that was out to aquire money. Rather than a system that was interested in using registry information to aid the program on opening the correct versions of needed library files. The biggest thing that distracted me from windows was a driver problem with the TTY driver. For Windows 3.1, the driver seemed to work correctly. But with the driver for Windows 95, it seemed to require a NULL character before it would work properly. Then with the TTY driver for NT4, the driver seemed to throw out a "line feed" or "carriage return" before it recieved information. I ended up having to work around these problem. Just as with many other problems with windows. You are right though, I feel about windows in a similar way to those that bash AOL. Just as a dedicated AOL user dislikes people "bashing thier boyz". A fanatical windows operator takes offense to even legitimate complaints to thier choices. About the so-called drivel about the running out of road. Why are their so many incompatible issues with different applications. Then the added dread of dll files not being of a standard format. The Linux bashers seem to cut down LInux for not having standards. Why is there so many versions of library files with the same name? Keith P.
