================================================ Subject: WAS - A Virus Warning - THEN - Virus != Hacker - NOW - Windows vs. Linux From: "]\\[][G}{T§TÖ®]v[" To: Date: Tue 7 Aug 2001 17:50:31 -0400 ================================================ Actually, if I wanted to use a system that would be virus free, I would use a Trash-80, thanks. And you were the only one that said in this discussion that one was better or worse. But I believe I've said that before, so I'll just leave you to your e-mail hallucinations. If you want to get technical about what had worms and such first, then yeah, of course Unix had them before Windows, since, as you said, Windows didn't exist yet. No new news there. How many virii do you see now that use Outlook to propagate, or affect files that are found only in Windows operating systems, compared to how many affect Linux systems? Do you think it might be possible that perhaps the reason not many people use Linux anymore is because of the availability of Windows? When you go and buy a new PC, what OS does it come with? One of the reasons that Windows is so popular among people is the click-and-choose method that it uses. Why would someone run on a system that might actually require a bit of brains and the need to type in commands once in a while when they can just double-click? And besides... AOL hasn't come out with a Linux version (I'll add in a "yet", since an AOL commercial just came on TV, and I am imagining "New AOL 7.0 for Linux" or "AOL 6.0 for DOS"... *shudder*) so how many people does that leave behind? The point I was making when I originally commented on setting up a dual-boot Win/Linux was, as you even said yourself, not nearly as many virii and worms are cruising around the net that affect the Linux System... plus, how many Linux-users do you come across that are complaining about just experiencing the "blue-screen of death", or complaining about just visiting a website, and having a /con/con crash their system? Plus, how easy is it to set up shell accounts and run webhosting on Windows? If you log into a shell provider like sparkhost or kirenet, you'll find that they all run Unix/Linux systems... and *some* people might like the idea of getting into hosting shell accounts and websites. I know for a fact that I would like to be hosting my own chat server (it's a royal pain in the ass having to contact other people every time a problem happens), and I would love for nothing more than to move the entire chat server network over to my computer... but as long as I have Windows, that's not going to happen (well, it can, but it will sure run ugly). It seems that you just read too deeply into the original mail that I sent... since it had nothing to do with what was better or worse... each one has it's good and bad qualities, but in every experience I've had, it was a Windows user that was being the target for whatever (bluescreen, packet, OOB, /con/con, Explorer error, the 50,001 virii out there) and the Linux users that laughed at them. And besides, for the things that I am wanting to do with my computer, Linux is the OS that I want to be using. If it's any consolation though, I'm pretty sure that Tara's computer will forever be a Windows system... she knows all she needs about computers, but for some reason I just don't see her running anything else but Microsoft Operating Systems. ¤]\[][G}{T§TÖ®]v[¤ (who might just consider running DOS soon... black screens can't have a blue screen, last I checked) http://NightStorm.isyourgod.com/ NightStorm_Draco_@hotmail.com NightStorm_Draco@creedlist.com NightStorm@isyourgod.com I've seen the wicked fruit of your vine, Destroy the man who lacks a strong mind Human pride sings a vengeful song Inspired by the times you've been walked on My stage is shared by many millions, Who lift their hands up high because they feel this We are one We are strong, The more you hold us down the more we press on What if you did?
