He spoke NO French, but I speak fluently, because I lived there when I was younger. But I am a little bit out of practice. So when he would try to get someone to speak to him in English, they would say they couldn't. But when I would begin speaking French to the same person, they would suddenly remember their English. They just want to see you make an effort. And if you get stuck, they'll generally help you out. But it also depends on whether the area you're visiting is a popular tourist attraction, or out in the middle of the countryside.
