It had been part of Mexico, and we Anglo types were revolting against our Mexican oppressors. Mexico hadn't successfully seized the land, the land was Mexican, and we took it and made it our own. The gun thing is a proud issue because we haven't surrendered our arms like so many others. And where is this place whence you hail at any rate? I think the Alamo is a pretty good symbol of that complete lack of victory by Texas. And I should modify the statement to say that Mexico had successfully seized land that was part of Texas. I'm not quite sure why you'd be proud of the highest gun ownership rates -- where I come from, people didn't need guns to feel safe. I personally happen to be a responsible gun owner, but I've never seen fit to advertise it as an issue of pride.
