What I actually said was that Madonna has an ACUTE sense of what her fans want (or more appropriately, WILL BUY), and has been able to change her persona countless times SUCCESSFULLY as a result (that last part is new). And for me, your point of "old" and "new" U2 fans is EXACTLY the same as Metallica's fan base. It seems with each new project, there's a "When is Metallica going to return to their roots?" debate. But for me, WHY SHOULD THEY? Their roots carried them as far as ...AJFA, but in truth, there is no point in "returning to their old sound".
