For that matter, it's not even necessary for them to be "labeled" as "metal". The point I was trying to make is that without their HUGE influence on rock in general, there'd BE no "metal". Even some critics (who IMO are largely a group of overpaid stuffed shirts) have drawn the comparison (i.e. "Metallica is the Led Zeppelin of the 90's").
