================================================ Subject: ncr: top drummers From: "~Kristin ~" To: Date: Fri 25 May 2001 14:35:05 -0700 ================================================ Max Roach was one of the best Jazz/BeBop Drummers of all-time.. here' an excerpt from a webpage I found about him.. Roach first played drums in gospel bands at the age of ten. In 1942 he began his association with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and others at Minton's Uptown House. It was this experience as well as his playing at Minton's playhouse that led to the development of the bop style. Roach played mostly with bop groups during the 40's, including quintets lead by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He also played with such performers as Coleman Hawkins and Miles Davis. Roach led an important quintet with Clifford Brown from 1954 to 1956, producing a number of seminal recordings that epitomized the style known as hard bop. In the 60's Roach became a spokesperson and activist in the black-American cultural movement. Roach continues to be active, recording with various groups and giving lectures on jazz. With Kenny Clarke, Max Roach holds a significant position in jazz history. He established the practice of setting the fixed pulse on the ride cymbal instead of the bass drum. "His imaginative performances as a soloist and his mature technique of improvisation, which is based on the use of deft interaction of pitch and timbral variety, subtleties of silence and sound, rhythmic and metrical contrast, and a refreshingly flexible approach to a fixed pulse, establish him as one of the most outstanding and innovative drummers of his time." ~Kristin "We may rise and fall, But in the end, We'll meet our fate together.." -----Original Message----- From: Sublim5516@AOL.COM Sent: Fri, 25 May 2001 16:37:26 EDT To: CREED-DISCUSS@WINDUPLIST.COM Subject: Re: Odp: Odp: Re: ncr: top drummers who is max roach?
