'Tis the same concept that communists and other totalitarianists use - "sacrifice yourself for the community," or "this sacrifice must be made for the people." 'Tis one o' those ideas that goes in cycles, with no real benefactors, usually. There are some exceptions, but as a general statement everything about "sacrifice" just has a connotation that I do not like. Interesting phrasology - "I don't classify myself as an Athiest or any other particular religion." Atheism is typically defined as being the lack of religion, but you seem to classify it as a religion itself. Is this what you intend, or was the statement merely worded incorrectly in some way? Although, Jim, you certainly do seem to have some excellent ideas on the subject, "centrality" et cetera. More power to you in that department. The Raven is not a symbol of any "faith" on my account, as I contend that I have no faith, in anything. It is merely the seeming "totemic connection" with me that is the most constant strain on my lack of belief in the "paranormal" or religious. The Raven is also the symbol of Corvism (which is derived from the Latin word "corvvs", which means "raven"), our "flag" for instance displays a raven with the seven ideals and "CORVVS" written on it in Latin. I also wear a pendant of a calling raven as others would wear a pendant of a cross, as a symbol of my alignment with Corvism. But I do not have any religious faith in, or worship of, ravens, nor do I pray to them. I merely use them as symbols of myself and of my philosophy. I may want to check out that song though, it sounds pray cool. Edgar Allen Poe's poem of the same name is a favorite of mine as well, as is an anonymous lay titled "The Voice of the Raven," which I have been known to quote on the list.
