================================================ Subject: Re: Odp: RE: NCR: Just testing.....works... What April release? From: "Tara" To: Date: Fri 13 Apr 2001 14:58:16 -0400 ================================================ Actually, I've lived in Michigan my whole life, and I don't think I've ever been referred to as a "cowpoke" or a "sheep-shearer". (Though there ARE quite a few cows near where I live... cows and trees). I'm used to Michigander, followed by Michiganian. Of course, I don't really know what people in other states think of Michigan, except that it's north and it's cold. Tara ----- Original Message ----- From: Tommy C. Whoa history lesson! :) lol Anyway, I thought MD was a Blue Belly? And Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Oregon, maybe a few others (I don't feel like checking) are Cowpokes. (although there is another name, sheep-shearers) And how my dad likes to put Hawiians = Grass Hippies or Hula Hippies. Sheesh, Spring break and I'm still thinking, my mind needs a vacation! :) (sorry if anyone has taken offense!) After the civil war, when Yankee came to denote someone who had fought for the Union, we Southerners and Westerners began to take offense at the term. So let me give you a rundown of the new (well, new as of like 150 years ago) regional derogatory terms: Yankee/ Yank/ Blue Belly/ Northerner - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Oregon, California, West Virginia, Delaware Rebel/ Reb/ Southerner - Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas Cowpoke/ Westerner - Washington, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Kansas, Nebraska, Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas Penguin/ Polar Bear/ Eskimo/ Igloo/ Alaskan - Alaska Grass/ Bluebird/ Hawaiian - Hawaii Cowpoke Reb/ Damn Texan/ Texian/ Texan - Texas Maybe you'll watch who you call a yank now, eh? I'm warnin' you man, we Texans are a proud bunch, and I think I'm gonna be in England late in June (Chichester to be precise)...so you watch yourself...ha! Anyway, no, I'm just tryin' to get the point across that Southerners and Westerners do NOT appreciate being called yankees/ yanks/ blue bellies, whatever. You call those Northeasterners, Californians, and Oregonians whatever the hell that you want, but leave us out of your generalizations... Anyway, hope I've been helpful to anyone who feels like insulting any Americans on their regionality (ha!). I should have called this "The Raven's Guide To American Regionalism" or something like that. If anyone sees any terms that I've missed, be sure to clue me in...
