Ooooooohhhhhhh...that stings. But I guess you're English, so maybe you don't understand the way the lingo's kinda changed. After the civil war, when Yankee came to denote someone who had fought for the Union, we Southerners and Westerners began to take offense at the term. So let me give you a rundown of the new (well, new as of like 150 years ago) regional derogatory terms:
Yankee/ Yank/ Blue Belly/ Northerner - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Oregon, California, West Virginia, Delaware
Rebel/ Reb/ Southerner - Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas
Cowpoke/ Westerner - Washington, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Kansas, Nebraska, Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas
    Penguin/ Polar Bear/ Eskimo/ Igloo/ Alaskan - Alaska
    Grass/ Bluebird/ Hawaiian - Hawaii
    Cowpoke Reb/ Damn Texan/ Texian/ Texan - Texas

Maybe you'll watch who you call a yank now, eh? I'm warnin' you man, we Texans are a proud bunch, and I think I'm gonna be in England late in June (Chichester to be precise)...so you watch yourself...ha! Anyway, no, I'm just tryin' to get the point across that Southerners and Westerners do NOT appreciate being called yankees/ yanks/ blue bellies, whatever. You call those Northeasterners, Californians, and Oregonians whatever the hell that you want, but leave us out of your generalizations...
Anyway, hope I've been helpful to anyone who feels like insulting any Americans on their regionality (ha!). I should have called this "The Raven's Guide To American Regionalism" or something like that. If anyone sees any terms that I've missed, be sure to clue me in...
As is always the case, have fun, and rock on!
