One guy in particular - I wore a Creed shirt to work, and he took one look at it and says "I prefer the original". I said "What, you mean MOP?" And he responded with "No, Pearl Jam. Creed's just another rip off". The conversation dragged on for quite a while, with him following me around insisting that I agree with him and me trying to explain basically what Michael said. Yes, Stapp and Vedder are both baritones. They both sing in bands that play roughly the same style of music. But I still remember the first time I heard Creed, and I never confused them with Pearl Jam. I didn't know who the band I'd heard was, but I didn't think for a moment that they were a band I'd heard before. (Though I do remember confusing STP with PJ, back when I was in high school). The biggest difference for me is the... style, I guess. They both do some pronunciations of words that are a bit uncommon, but they do it in different ways. And (to me) Vedder has a lot of vibrato in his voice that Stapp doesn't. It's been quite a while since I've taken a music class, so I can't remember the phrases that describe the different intonations and such... but even if I can't describe it, it's my thought that it's there. It's been my experience that the people who say Creed is ripping off PJ are the same people who've never really sat down to listen to Creed. You'll ask them to name a song that's a blatant rip-off of PJ, and they'll respond with "Oh, you know, that one they play on the radio... I can't remember the name of it... but they play it all the time..." (Which describes about four different Creed songs, at least around here. Sidenote: I can remember people on this list complaining that Creed never got any airplay... and now I see people complaining that they get too much airplay. Just can't win, eh? Back to the original topic...) Perhaps if someone forced them to listen to a few hours of Creed (*evil grin*) they'd be more aware of the stylistic differences. Or at least they'd be willing to SAY that they heard the difference, just so they'd be allowed to leave. Before I go over the line limit with my post alone (if I haven't already), I'll quit my rambling. *looks for the duct tape - no better way to stop rambling on a computer than to tape one's fingers together, right?* Tara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Kulics" To: Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2002 3:11 PM Subject: The Calling vs Lifehouse,Hugo vs. Scott, and what' this?
