================================================ Subject: The Calling vs Lifehouse Hugo vs. Scott and what' this? Eddie come out on top! From: "Michael Kulics" To: Date: Sun 13 Jan 2002 15:11:08 -0500 ================================================ Hey people, what's up? I only posted once, and that was my introduction a couple months ago. I know there is at least one on here, so I want to give attention to my fellow Stabbie(s) on this list. What's up guys? Anyway, I've noticed this thing a little while ago. The "newer" bands I'm going to refer to in this email are The Calling, Tantric, and Lifehouse (There might be one more, but if there is, their name eludes me right now). All of these bands have something in common: all of their lead singers sound somewhat the same, with those same baritone sounds. Now throw in Creed, despite the fact they've been putting albums out since '97 (If I'm wrong here, someone correct me, but I thought 1997 was when MOP came out). I don't think it's fair to be comparing these bands to each other, and I totally don't think it's fair to be comparing them to Creed (Creed is out of their league, well, except maybe Tantric :-)). I mean guys, think about it for a sec. I know I kept getting pissed when people kept comparing our boy Scottie to my other boy, a one Mr. Eddie Vedder. People really can't change the way they sing. They sing in baritone, because that's the way they sing. They really can't change that. One person could say The Calling are ripping off Creed, Tantric is ripping of Creed, but when it comes down to these people and their arguments, if you look at things from their standpoint, then all of these bands, even Creed, are ripping off of Pearl Jam. All of these arguments just because the lead singers sound similar, not based on their music. I personally love both Creed and Pearl Jam (they're in my Big Four of all my favorite bands. The other two bands are Stabbing Westward and Nirvana), but I can tell the difference between a PJ song and a Creed song, both musically and vocally. It's not fair to judge a band when the thing being judged on is not the actual music. If I'm making sense here, let me know. I know that when I try and sing, I'm told I sound like a strange (retarded, if you will) mix between Eddie Vedder/Scott Stapp/Hugo (sorry, I forgot his last name)/insert a baritone singer here and Kurt Cobain. I can also switch it up a little and then I sound a little like a strange (again, retarded if you will) mix of Chris Hall (lead singer of Stabbing Westward), Trent Reznor, and a little mix of baritone mixed in. I have an exceptionally deep voice, so the baritone sound always finds it's way in if I want it to or not. If I actually had singing lessons, I wouldn't be that bad, but I think paying for college is more important then singing lessons. Anyway, I hope you guys get my point of people are just born and can sing a certain way, and can't necessarily change it. Couple other things no related to the original subject of this email: Someone said in a prior email that Mark did't move to Florida until he was in college, but I thought him and Stapp met in High School. Someone clear this one up for me. In some emails I see "NP" and then the names of songs. Forgive my ignorance here, but what does NP stand for? Here I want plug my favorite band, and sorry guys, it' not Creed (as I wait for the rotten fruit to start flying my way after that comment ;-) ). If you guys like good, pulsing music from a band that is overall one of the most talented bands out there, with a kick ass (and one of my own personal favorite and in my opinion, one of the best vocalists around) lead singer, check out Stabbing Westward. They have 4 albums out, and they all sound different. The best way I can describe their music is as fusion. It's a mixed bag, but all are different elements of rock with a healthy mix of the electronic. It's very powerful and emotional music. Anyways . . . . Thanks for listening to me ramble on for the whole email. I know I covered a couple different things, but I figured I'd squeeze it all into one email instead of writing a bunch of different smaller emails and cluttering everyone's mail boxes.
